The World Economic Forum projects 92 million jobs disrupted and 170 million created worldwide by 2030, while INCOSE’s own Systems Engineering Vision 2035 warns that the supply of well-trained systems engineers already can’t meet demand. Now add AI rewriting model-based systems engineering, digital engineering, and the core competencies our graduates need on day one. The organizations shaping this field are moving fast; the question is whether industry and academia are moving together. Too often we’re not — employers see the shift in real time, universities feel it a step behind, and the people who could close that gap have too few opportunities to work together.

The 2026 Cornell Systems Summit is designed to create those opportunities. Building on two years of momentum, we’re bringing industry, government, and academic leaders to Cornell for high-energy panels and hands-on working groups where we won’t just talk about the AI-driven skills gap — we’ll work together to define it and develop solutions.

Josh Blumenstock is a Chancellor's Professor at the School of Information and the Goldman School of Public Policy at the University of California, Berkeley, where he directs the Global Opportunity Lab.

Jessica Ratcliff is an Associate Professor in the Department of Science & Technology Studies at Cornell University.
